Ballooning costs, a loss of jobs, and cuts to food programs
will mean New Mexicans go to bed hungry.

Here are the facts:

Many New Mexico households struggle to put food on the table. The most recent data show in 2023: 12.9% of households were “food insecure,” meaning that their access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources. Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, January 21, 2025   https://www.cbpp.org/sites/default/files/atoms/files/snap_factsheet_new_mexico.pdf
  • Approximately 35,000 New Mexico families with children will lose an average of $70 in food assistance per month, or $840 worth of assistance a year.  https://www.nmvoices.org/archives/19792

Even though one in four kids (and one in five adults) in NM rely on SNAP, not to mention farmers and grocery stores, the Trump administration is dismantling the SNAP program and at the same time slashing funds for food banks.
  • 451,200 New Mexico residents, or 21% of the state population (1 in 5) received SNAP benefits. Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, January 21, 2025 https://www.cbpp.org/sites/default/files/atoms/files/snap_factsheet_new_mexico.pdf
  • In New Mexico, more than 500 shelters, pantries, schools and hot-meal sites comprise the state’s “food bank. Sources:https://sourcenm.com/2025/08/19/nm-food-banks-say-they-will-struggle-to-provide-meals-for-those-who-lose-federal-benefits/

Besides hurting the hungry, cuts to SNAP benefits hurts grocery stores; cuts to food banks hurts farmers.
  •  “Recent estimates from the state Health Care Authority predict about 1,700 gas stations, groceries, convenience stores and farmers’ markets statewide stand to lose about $1.3 billion in SNAP revenue. “ https://sourcenm.com/2025/09/03/vasquez-warns-republican-snap-cuts-will-hit-rural-areas-hardest/
