A Brief Bio
Gabe Vasquez became the representative of New Mexico's Congressional District 2 in 2022. He was re-elected in 2024 and has filed to run again in 2026. Gabe is the first Democrat to serve two terms for this district since 1980.
Gabe was born in El Paso, the first in his family to be born in the United States. He was raised by his mother in the El Paso–Juárez–Las Cruces border region, although he did not speak English until he began second or third grade. He spent a lot of time in his grandfather’s TV repair shop in the Chaveña neighborhood of Ciudad Juarez. He saw firsthand the important cross-border connections and relationships that support families and businesses in New Mexico.
He graduated from high school in El Paso. Gabe attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where he earned a BA in English and journalism in 2008. During college, he served as the news editor and later the editor-in-chief of The Round Up, NMSU’s student-run newspaper. His first job out of college was as the business editor for the Las Cruces Bulletin from 2008 to 2011.
Before becoming a congressman, Gabe served as the executive director of the Las Cruces Hispano Chamber of Congress and as Senator Martin Heinrich's Southwest District representative.
In 2017 Gabe was elected to the Las Cruces City Council, defeating the chair of the local Tea Party and winning over 70% of the vote. As city councilman he delivered millions of dollars in investments to create and improve parks, updated the district’s infrastructure, promoted policy that created thousands of jobs and helped to craft a comprehensive development plan to lift families out of poverty.
