Our Strategy1. Focus on NM Congressional District 2The US House of Representatives seat from New Mexico's District 2 has swung between Democrats and Republicans over the last few election cycles, but has long been a Republican district.
In 2022, Democrat Gabe Vasquez was elected by the narrowest of margins: 1,346 votes. So it's no surprise his seat is one of the top five Republican targets for flipping in 2024. He will be running against his former opponent and the woman who represented the district before him, Yvette Herrell, a MAGA Republican. The U.S. House majority is up for grabs next year. Rep. Vasquez has done a terrific job representing his constituents. We believe we can help send him back to Congress and by doing so, not only retake the majority in the House, but make NM-2 a safe Democratic seat into the future. 2. Use ultra-local messaging. Our goal is to convince voters that sending a Democrat to Congress really matters by showing them how Democrats have made – and are making– life better in New Mexico, county by county. See our map on the home page and dive into one of the district's counties to see examples of this message. 3. Go after the reluctant voters no one else can reach.
Blue CD2 New Mexico had great success in 2022 targeting registered voters who hadn't gone to the polls in the previous two election cycles. The result? We motivated 6783 low-frequency, Democratic-leaning people in CD2 to vote. Gabe Vasquez won by 1346 votes. Now we are taking our successful voter motivation strategy to the next level in 2024. Who is Gabe Vasquez?Gabe is a first-generation American and a conservationist who grew up in the borderlands. As the first in his family to be born in the United States, he has served as a Las Cruces City Councilor, worked on Senator Heinreich's staff in Southern New Mexico, in public lands conservation, and as a policy advocate promoting child welfare and family wellbeing at the federal level.
Growing up, Gabe lived on both sides of the border. He saw firsthand the important cross-border connections and relationships that support families and businesses in New Mexico. He knows that if we’re going to build a stronger economy in New Mexico’s 2nd district, we need people in Congress who will put partisan politics aside to deliver for New Mexican families.
