ROADS & BRIDGES NM 404 “Anthony Gap."
New Mexico State Road 404 (NM 404) is a 9.7-mile-long paved, two-lane state-maintained road in Doña Ana County that runs east–west across a gap between the northern edge of the Franklin Mountains and the southern edge of the North Franklin Mountains. Why fix the “Anthony Gap?” Two serious head-on crashes happened in the Anthony Gap in February, 2023. “For years, you know, that area has been scary, since I can remember,” said Maryann Parga, who drives through the Anthony Gap every day for work. Other road projects in Doña Ana County funded through the Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration include: ELECTRIC VEHICLES Clean Transit Buses for the City of Las Cruces
Clean Buses for Las Cruces Public Schools The New Mexico Department of Transportation will receive $63.8 million to build two EV charging centers for medium- and heavy-duty commercial electric vehicles traveling along Interstate 10. One will be built along 1-10 near Vado. Each center will have nine pull-through stalls and will serve as a crucial link along the 1-10 Electric Corridor, the nation’s first network of high-powered charging centers for heavy-duty trucks from ports in southern California to El Paso. The center will get at least some of its power from fields of solar panels. Charging centers take about 2 years to build. See more here.
“Placing one of these chargers in Vado will be transformational,” said state Rep. Doreen Gallegos, District 52. ”This $63 million investment to Lordsburg and Vado is the largest award in the United States and will go a long way in not just supporting cleaner trucks, but boosting economic development in our rural communities,” said Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-N.M. BROADBAND A state program, Connect New Mexico, will pair state and federal funds from the Infrastructure Bill to bring broadband to nine communities and colonias in southern Doña Ana County: First, Anthony, Berino, Chamberino, La Mesa and Vado, followed by Chaparral, La Union, Santa Teresa and Sunland Park.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, through its Rural Development Reconnect Program, will provide over $9 million from the Infrastructure Law for New Mexico-based Sacred Wind Communications to expand reliable, affordable, high-speed internet for residents in Sierra and Doña Ana counties.
This investment will allow 4,962 people, 106 businesses, 11 farms, and 17 educational facilities in Doña Ana and Sierra counties to benefit from a new fiber optic network to be built with the funds. Sacred Wind Communications Telesolutions, Inc. will make high-speed internet affordable by participating in the Federal Communications Commission's Affordable Connectivity Program. It’s a game changer for New Mexico. It’s a game changer for agriculture, it’s a game changer for anybody in rural areas, because they can live the way that urban America has.” –John Diamond, Beaverhead Ranch Group COMMUNITY SAFETY $10 million to modernize gas pipelines in Las Cruces to protect residents from dangerous leaks. Aging pipelines have been involved in fatal explosions and massive spills in other states. These repairs will help reduce methane emissions by roughly 212 metric tons a year.
Emergency Planning: An All-Hazard Safety Plan for the City of Las Cruces, Elephant Butte Irrigation District, Village of Hatch, Town of Mesilla, NMSU, and City of Sunland
Hatch Flood Control Study The community of Hatch has been flooded three times in the last 15 years, most recently in 2006. Flooding originates from two sources, Spring Canyon and Placitas Arroyo. Initial investigations determined that there is a likely federal interest in constructing flood control projects in the area. A $6.5 million feasibility study of Hatch (Sec 205) by the Corps of Engineers will determine federal interest and optimize a flood damage reduction plan for Hatch. See more here. Improving Railroad Crossings to stop collisions
Doña Ana County will receive $37.1 million in federal funding for a project aimed at eliminating train-vehicle collisions in Santa Teresa. The grant will improve safety and make it easier “to get around railroad tracks by adding grade separations, closing at-grade crossings, and improving existing at-grade crossings where train tracks and roads intersect. “I’m proud to see the federal government investing in the development of this overpass in the Santa Teresa Region because it promotes safety while encouraging freight vehicles and passengers to use the Santa Teresa Port of Entry,” U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-NM, said. “I recently introduced legislation to modernize our land ports of entry because the ports of entry in New Mexico, like the Santa Teresa Port of Entry, are a leading example of how we need to support our border communities.” See more here and here. |

RURAL COMMUNITIES BENEFIT
Farmers can keep farming; ranchers can keep ranching. New Mexico has over 23,800 family-owned farms and ranches, encompasses 49 million acres of farmland and is home to more than 1.4 million head of cattle. Agriculture is the third largest industry in our state, with a total economic impact of $40 billion, and yearly revenue of over 3 billion dollars. We are the leading producer of chile nationwide, often the largest producer of pecans in the U.S, and rank third for onion production, ninth for milk production, and sixteenth for cattle and calf production. The Inflation Reduction Act is designed to keep producers producing on their land. It does so by providing:
