New Mexico families over Trump’s billionaire buddies

Every American should be able to afford a place they can call home. But more and more New Mexicans face a crisis: the cost of buying or renting a home or apartment is too high.

For many young people the American dream of owning a home and starting a family is out of reach.

Young people leaving school and strapped for cash face an uncertain job market. They have put off having children because they are too expensive to raise.
What’s driving this crisis?
Billionaire investors and their for-profit real estate companies have created this crisis. Hedge funds are buying up larger and larger shares of single-family homes, hoarding the housing supply to turn huge profits for their investors and crowding out hardworking families from the market. That supply crunch makes home ownership out of reach for many hardworking families
Wealthy hedge fund investors have entered the housing market.
-
In 2011, no single entity owned over 1,000 single-family rental units.
-
In 2022, large institutional investors and hedge funds owned about 700,000 single-family home rentals.
-
Financial analysts forecast that large investors will own about 40% of all single-family home rentals by 2030.
As a result, buying a home is 150% more expensive than in 2019.

Who’s doing something about the housing affordability crisis?
Rep. Gabe Vasquez chooses New Mexico families over billionaires.
He backs these bills:
Keep Mobile Homes Affordable Act
NO price gouging mobile home residents.
One in six homes in New Mexico is a mobile home.
Cuts red tape and lowers costs for mobile home buyers.
Ensures rents and housing costs stay within reach for working families
Neighborhood Homes Investment Act
Incentivizes developers to build in low-income areas.

Provides flexible financing for home-owners
Bipartisan Families First Housing Act
Blocks big investors from buying single-family homes
Stop Wall Street Landlords Act
Limits tax breaks on mortgages for large investors
Funds construction of affordable housing

Senator Martin Heinrich co-sponsored the Humans Over Private Equity (HOPE) for Homeownership Act, a bill that would kick hedge funds out of the housing market and lower housing costs for New Mexico families in New Mexico and across the country. Along with Sen. Ben Ray Luján, Sen. Heinrich introduced the Housing for All Act to build more homes for New Mexicans and reduce homelessness.

My message to hedge funds: Get out of the housing market. The American dream of home ownership should be in the hands of New Mexico families, not billionaire investors.
~Senator Martin Heinrich
WE CAN CHOOSE
Funding for ICE or affordable health care?

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) received seventy five billion dollars* from Trump’s Trump’s One Big Beautiful Act (OBBA) passed by Republicans in July 2025. That is more money than most militaries in the world receive annually.

It's about priorities. When you elect someone, you want to know: what are they going to focus on?
Trump is not focused on what you’re paying for healthcare or groceries or whether your kids go to better schools. He’s focused on tax cuts for billionaires and sending masked unaccountable agents to terrorize communities.
That’s where your tax dollars are going.

Instead of spending trillions to widen the gap between the rich and poor, Trump and Republicans could have made childcare more affordable, improved housing options, and created a program for paid family and medical leave. Instead, they gave away money to billionaires and funded ICE.
